The great poem on this week’s sheet – known as St Patrick’s Breastplate and unfortunately too hard to sing without a rehearsal – spells out something of this week’s great Feast. ‘The strong name of the Trinity’ is there for us to be bound to – in other words it is God’s protection for us and to us. It is a sign of a living God who is involved in our lives and cares about our lives and how we live, a God who knows our faults and will help us grow through them into more of what we are made to be. Our aim is the ‘sweet well done on Judgement Day’ and through binding ourselves to this powerful God this can be done.

Maggie and I (and the dog)  have spent this last week exploring the greatness of God’s creation along the Wales Coast Path – the less challenging bits – and I strongly commend this. A good way of having days at the seaside and pretending you have a purpose other than leisure! We even had one day of sunshine……

Life now seems almost back to our usual rhythm. We pray that this may continue.
Peace and joy,
Fr Philip

St. Patrick’s Breastplate

I bind unto myself today
The strong Name of the Trinity,
By invocation of the same
The Three in One and One in Three.

I bind this today to me forever
By power of faith, Christ’s incarnation;
His baptism in Jordan river,
His death on Cross for my salvation;
His bursting from the spicèd tomb,
His riding up the heavenly way,
His coming at the day of doom
I bind unto myself today.

I bind unto myself the power
Of the great love of Cherubim;
The sweet ‘Well done’ in judgment hour,
The service of the Seraphim,
Confessors’ faith, Apostles’ word,
The Patriarchs’ prayers, the prophets’ scrolls,
All good deeds done unto the Lord
And purity of virgin souls.

Christ be with me, Christ within me,
Christ behind me, Christ before me,
Christ beside me, Christ to win me,
Christ to comfort and restore me.
Christ beneath me, Christ above me,
Christ in quiet, Christ in danger,
Christ in hearts of all that love me,
Christ in mouth of friend and stranger.

I bind unto myself the Name,
The strong Name of the Trinity,
By invocation of the same,
The Three in One and One in Three.
By Whom all nature hath creation,
Eternal Father, Spirit, Word:
Praise to the Lord of my salvation,
Salvation is of Christ the Lord.
