Parish magazine December 2019

It’s beginning to feel a lot like Christmas! Although I have to say, it’s quite strange to see election leaflets and posters vying for space with the usual Christmas cards and decorations. As they say, “we live in interesting times!” And this month’s magazine is full of interesting things – a real mix of content…

Thank you from Bridgend Foodbank

We have received this lovely Thank you from the Trustees at Bridgend Foodbank. Thanks to the generous donations from the Parish our donation of 77 kgs has enabled them to feed 22 people three meals a day for three days. This is helping those in crisis in our Borough. Thank you to everyone who contributes.…

What an awesome total!

A fantastic month of raising money at the Jolly Sailor Quiz nights for the bells in Newton Church raised an awesome £1200! Isn’t that fantastic! Thank you to everyone who supported the quiz during October and an enormous THANK YOU to Joy, Mike and all at the Jolly Sailor for taking us on!

Parish magazine November 2019

It’s a good job I like jigsaws because this month’s magazine has been just that. Thank you so much for all the amazing contributions this month – it’s certainly kept me quiet piecing it all together! The usual news from across the Parish is particularly chatty this month and Deborah’s talk at the Mothers’ Union…

How’s this for new clerical dress!

John Berry provided this great photo with the comment that he thought the new clerical dress is an improvement. The photo shows Fr Hugh James in the centre. Some of you may remember him – he served his curacy here in the 1980’s! John says, “Hugh was a priest here when I arrived in Porthcawl…

Parish magazine October 2019

Harvest is a time of celebration and we certainly have lots to celebrate in this issue. Once again, the pages are packed full of goodies from across the Parish. It’s been a month of food and fundraising too. Cream Teas, Coffee Mornings, Cycle Rides and (Half) Marathon Running! Busy people and lots of monies raised…

St John’s Summer Fayre – changes afoot!

A cheque for £10,202.39 was presented to the Rector on behalf of the Summer Fayre committee at a ceremony in the Schoolroom on the 26th of September.   On the same evening, Jill White stepped down as secretary and Andrew Singer stepped down as chairman.  Jonathan and Karen Lewis ‘volunteered’ to be chairman and secretary…

Parish magazine September 2019

Here we are at the start of a new school year – can you believe it! It’s a great time of year with many new beginnings, although as Geoff reminds us in his article, it can be quite daunting. We’ve had a busy summer with a mixed bag of weather, but plenty to smile about…

Mothers’ Union Tea Party

Instead of our usual monthly meeting, in August we had a ‘Tea Party’ to celebrate the life of Mary Sumner, founder of the Mothers’ Union. We invited members from Llantwit Major Mothers’ Union, including Fr Craig (we visited them last summer). To add to the occasion everyone had to wear ‘hats’, including the men! We…

Geoff Lunn ordination as Deacon

Waiting for God

As you all know, I had an awesome day being ordained deacon at Llandaff Cathedral on Saturday 29th June. At this truly joyous occasion, Bishop June Osborne conducted the ordinations and Bishop John Gladwin preached an inspiring sermon. I was ordained Deacon along with three priests and five other deacons. I am now taking up…
